The Sales Buzz Issue 144 - New to Selling - Free Sales Training
December 12, 2011
Hi,

In this week's Sales Buzz:

If you're new to selling, starting a small business, or sell as a part of your role, this week's free newsletter will show you the first steps to learning how to earn money from selling...

New to Selling
Free Sales Training

Many people move into a sales role by accident, unintentionally, or because it is a part of a wider role that they fulfil.

I have worked with small business owners and self employed people who have gone into business for themselves because they can offer a great service, but they have limited knowledge about selling and no sales skills.

If this is you, and you're new to selling keep reading...

Everyone in sales has a starting point, a moment when their unconscious incompetence becomes conscious incompetence.

Unconscious and Conscious Incompetence explained:

Unconscious Incompetence:

This is when you don’t know what you don’t know. Remember when you learned how to drive a car.

There was so much that you were unaware of before you had your first lesson.

One of the first things you started to learn was a list of things you didn’t know.

Once you were consciously aware of the things you needed to learn you could start learning them.

Without this list of what you need to know you wouldn’t know where to start and if you did learn to drive it would be after a lot of trial and error.

Learning how to sell is exactly the same. The first step is to become Consciously Incompetent.

The term Incompetent may sound a little insulting but stick with me it will be worth it...

Consciously Incompetent

This is when you know what you don’t know.

Going back to the learning to drive example, this is when you have had a couple of lessons and you know what the sequence of actions is for driving a car. You are not yet competent at each of these actions or capable of completing the actions in a sequence that makes the car move in a controlled manner.

The great positive about being Consciously Incompetent is that you know what it is that you need to learn.

So if you are new to sales, inexperienced, selling as a small part of your role, or starting a small business, what do you need to know to get you from Unconscious Incompetence to Conscious Incompetence?

And once you know what you don’t know, how do you learn the skills required to complete the stages of a sale.
